SS-31

SS-31 (common name: Elamipretide, also known as MTP-131 or Bendavia) is a synthetic aromatic cationic tetrapeptide (composed of four amino acids: D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂). It has been extensively studied for its potential to improve mitochondrial function, protect cells, and combat aging.

SS-31's Main Efficacy and Mechanism of Action • Cardiolipin Binding: SS-31 can specifically bind to cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane structure. • Improved Energy Metabolism (ATP Synthesis): It can fix the protein complex of the electron transport chain, prevent oxidative damage to cardiolipin, enhance respiratory complex activity, and thus improve ATP (energy) production efficiency. • Antioxidant and Reduction of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS): It can effectively reduce the level of ROS in mitochondria and cells, alleviating oxidative stress. • Anti-inflammatory and Apoptosis Inhibition: In models such as acute kidney injury, it has been found to inhibit the expression of downstream NLRP3 inflammasomes, reducing apoptosis. • Research and Clinical Application Directions: Current research mainly focuses on diseases related to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as heart failure, age-related muscle weakness, acute kidney injury, and rare diseases such as Barth syndrome.
